The demand and support for women to take on the roles of society’s leaders are not at all a new phenomenon. Whether concerning women’s roles in the family or in community governance, the Minangkabau tribes operate in accordance to a matriarchal system. Can traditional belief systems be adapted to the reality that has pushed men and women to help each other to support their households? How have the ancestral ways of the Minangkabau been combined with Islam? The best ones to answer these questions are the Minangkabau people themselves. We knock on their doors to speak to them about the truth of their everyday lives.
